Of all the Panchakarma therapies used at the clinic, Basti is the one most consistently included across fertility treatment plans — for both women and men. Ayurveda considers it the principal therapy for Vata disorders, and since Vata governs the rhythm and timing behind ovulation, menstruation, and sperm production alike, Basti plays a foundational role in nearly every case.
Basti (बस्ती) is a medicated enema therapy in which herbal oil or decoction is administered rectally, following proper Purvakarma preparation. It is considered one of the most important Panchakarma therapies in classical Ayurveda specifically because Vata is regarded as the leading dosha — when Vata is balanced, Pitta and Kapha tend to follow. Basti works by pacifying aggravated Vata and restoring its natural downward-moving quality, which governs the timely release of both ovum and semen.
Vata governs movement, timing, and rhythm throughout the reproductive system. In women, this includes the regularity of the menstrual cycle and the timing of ovulation. In men, it governs the process of ejaculation and the movement of semen. When Vata is aggravated — commonly from chronic stress, irregular routine, excessive fasting, or overexertion — this rhythm becomes disturbed, and dryness or depletion can follow, affecting the quality of the underlying reproductive tissue over time.
Basti follows the standard Panchakarma structure — Purvakarma preparation, the enema therapy itself administered over a course of days as determined by the physician, and Paschatkarma dietary guidance afterward. It is generally well tolerated and is one of the therapies most frequently repeated across a treatment plan, since its Vata-pacifying benefits are cumulative over several sessions rather than achieved in a single sitting. Dr. Sagar Narkhede determines the type of Basti (oil-based or decoction-based), its frequency, and its duration according to each patient’s Prakriti and the severity of Vata involvement.
If you or your partner are dealing with a fertility concern linked to irregular cycles, diminished reserve, semen quality, or stress, and want to know how Basti fits into your treatment, Dr. Narkhede Ayurved & Panchkarma Clinic offers a personalised consultation with Dr. Sagar Narkhede to assess Prakriti and dosha imbalance before recommending the right Panchakarma therapy.
